ORIGIN 
Fidel Castro was a Cuban political leader who served as the 16th prime minister of Cuba and later as the 17th president of Cuba. His political views were based on Marxism–Leninism and Cuban nationalism. Castro was born on August 13, 1926, near Biran, Cuba. His father, Angel Castro y Argiz, was a sugar plantation owner, and his mother, Lina Ruz Gonzales, was a maid. He had several siblings including Juanita, Raul, Ramon, Angela, Emma, and Agustina. Castro attended high school at Colegio de Belen in Havana. He graduated from the University of Havana with a law degree in 1950.
CAREER
Castro was imprisoned in 1953 after he led an unsuccessful campaign against Fulgencio Batista’s regime. He was released from prison in 1955 under an amnesty deal. Castro led the Cuban Revolution and used guerrilla warfare to overthrow Batista in 1959. He served as Cuba’s 16th Prime Minister from February 1959 through December 1976. During his tenure, Castro fought off the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961. His alliance with the Soviet Union sparked the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
Castro was elected as president of Cuba in 1976. He held that office for more than 30 years before stepping down in February 2008. He was succeeded by his younger brother Raul Castro who became the 18th President of Cuba. Other offices held by Castro included Secretary-General of the Non-Aligned Movement (1979-83, 2006-08), and First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (1961-2011). He was honored with the Chinese Confucius Peace Prize in December 2014.
