Robert John Downey Jr. is an American actor best known for his superhero role in the Marvel films. He was born on April 4, 1965 in Manhattan, New York. His father, Robert Downey Sr., is an actor and filmmaker and his mother, Elsie Ford, was an actress. His older sister, Allyson, is also into acting. Downey was raised in Greenwich Village. He moved to California in 1978 shortly after his parents divorced. He attended Santa Monica High School but dropped out before completing his diploma.
CAREER
Downey made his acting debut at the age of five. He played the role of a puppy in the 1970 film, Pound, directed by his father. Other early film appearances include Baby It’s You (1983), Tuff Turf (1985), and Weird Science (1985). He was a cast member on Saturday Night Live for 18 episodes from 1985-1986. He followed up with a lead role as “Jack Jericho” in the 1987 romantic-comedy, The Pick-up Artist. He starred alongside Andrew McCarthy and Jami Gartz in the 1987 drama, Less Than Zero. Downey portrayed British comedian ‘Charlie Chaplin’ in the 1992 biographical film, Chaplin. His performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for best actor.
In 2000, Downey was cast as “Larry Paul” in the television series, Ally McBeal. He appeared in 25 episodes from 2000-2002 and was awarded a Golden Globe Award in 2001 for Best Supporting Actor. He later starred in the films, The Singing Detective (2003), Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) and Tropic Thunder (2008). Downey landed the memorable role of “Tony Stark” aka “Iron Man” in the 2008 superhero film, Iron Man. He’s since reprised the role of Iron Man in the remaining Marvel films.
