The state Department of Human Services is warning the general public of a text message scam targeting food stamp recipients.

The message may say the recipient has been chosen to receive food stamps or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

While only one fraud attempt has been reported, the department warned the public to be aware and to never share personal information with individuals or organizations that they do not know. This includes social security numbers, bank information, SNAP electronic benefits transfer cards or PIN numbers.

Recipients should contact their local SNAP office to determine whether a request for information about SNAP is real or not. If they think the message is a scam, they should simply delete the message.
